The tasks of the vine at this time of year include the trimming off the tops of the vines. Below is Yvan Dufouleur trimming his high vines in the Hautes Côte de Nuits with a tractor. Rotating blades will cut off any branches and leaves that go above or beyond a certain level. This is necessary so the vine doesn't waste its energy producing and nourishing extra branches and leaves when it can concentrate its energy on the grapes.![]() The low vines in the Côte d Nuits use a step-over tractor for this job, but we are seeing more and more people trimming their vines by hand to avoid using their tractors too much on the fields since the tractors are quite heavy (although some trim by hand simply due to logistical problems - your tractors can't be everywhere at once !) The 2001 vintage is shaping up well for the moment. There were no late frosts during the budding. The flowering took place on time, in good weather conditions - around June 12th. The volume of grapes seen after the flowering is high. As of mid-July, temperatures are lower than normal, which, if conditions continue, could promote mildew. We will see how things are shaping up in a month or two. ![]() Pinot Noir grapes on July 12, 2001 in Vosne-Romanée |
